\"\"The doctrine of the aerial tollhouses (\u043c\u044b\u0442\u0430\u0440\u0441\u0442\u0432\u0430) is a traditional Orthodox teaching, especially preserved among the Old Believers, the Russian Orthodox Church, and also within Greek patristic sources. It concerns the soul\u2019s journey after death, specifically its passage through a series of demonic “tollhouses” where the sins of the soul are tested and judged.<\/p>\n

According to this teaching, immediately after death, the soul undergoes a forty-day journey. During this period, it encounters demonic spirits at various stations (the tollhouses), each one testing the soul regarding specific types of sins: slander, pride, greed, fornication, heresy, and so forth. If the soul has not repented of these sins and does not have the protection of its good deeds, prayers, and divine mercy, it risks being seized by demons and cast into Hades.
\n<\/p>\n

This is not some pious folklore, as the modernists and ecumenists blasphemously claim. It is grounded in Scripture, the Holy Fathers, and the constant witness of the Church.<\/p>\n

Scriptural Foundations<\/strong>
\nEphesians 2:2 speaks of the ruler of the power of the air, which is a spirt that works among the disobedient. This is the devil indicating that the demonic forces inhabit the aerial regions. It is in this aerial realm that the souls encounter the tollhouses.<\/p>\n

In Luke 16:22-23, we read about the poor man who died and was carried away by angels to be with Abraham. There was a rich man who also died. The account says he was in Hades being tormented. We see this as indicating immediate judgement upon death, supporting the idea of an initial, particular judgement before the general Resurrection.<\/p>\n

1 Peter 5:8 speaks about making sure we keep ourselves disciplined and awake because the devil is looking for people to consume. The vigilance required of the faithful even at the moment of death reflects the active threats from the demons.<\/p>\n

The Fathers interpret Matthew 5:25 allegorically, speaking of the soul needing to reconcile with God through repentance before being handed over to demonic accusers after death.<\/p>\n

Patristic Testimony<\/strong>
\nThe tollhouses are vividly described in the Life of St. Anthony the Great (written by St. Athanasius), where St. Anthony beholds the soul ascending but being stopped by demons who accuse it of sins. St. John Climacus, in the Ladder of Divine Ascent, alludes to the demonic “tax-collectors” (demons) who obstruct the soul\u2019s ascent.<\/p>\n

St. Cyril of Alexandria and St. Gregory the Dialogist (Pope Gregory the Great) also make mention of aerial spirits challenging the soul.<\/p>\n

Rejection of Modernist Denials<\/strong>
\nToday, modernist and ecumenist theologians, who have drunk deeply from the poisoned wells of Western rationalism and heresy, dismiss the tollhouses as “allegory” or “outdated imagery.” They betray the consensus of the Fathers. The aerial tollhouses are not optional opinions. They are part of the sacred tradition, arising organically from the Scriptures and the experience of the saints. <\/p>\n

Anyone who says the tollhouses are “not really Orthodox” or “just a Russian invention” is either ignorant or dishonest. The aerial testing of souls is part of the unbroken testimony of the ancient Fathers, East and West. It is not a curiosity of later piety. It is a warning from the saints themselves, who experienced these truths directly.<\/p>\n
